Margaret Hunt's Household Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm

Thumbling (2) (3)

  • The story begins with a peasant couple lamenting that they have no children
    • The wife said she would be happy if they even had a kid the size of her thumb
  • The wife became ill and gave birth to a thumb-sized child, which they named Thumbling
    • As the kid grew up, he excelled at everything he did
  • His father once went into the woods and wished someone could pull the cart for him, THumbling told him he would get it done
    • The wife equips the cart with a horse and Thumbling spoke in the horse's ear
      • as he was making his way, two men saw the miraculously moving cart and followed it
    • Upon seeing the small kid, the two men offered to buy him from his father, who refused
      • But Thumbling told him to sell him, for he would come back soon
    • Thumbling slipped into a mouse-hole, escaping the men, and they were forced to head home
  • After the men left, Thumbling found a snail-shell to spend the night in, as it was too dark to travel home
    • Two thieves passed by him, and Thumbling said he could help them steal from the pastor
    • The thieves brought him with them and he snuck between the bars of the pastor's window
    • Upon entering the Thumbling loudly questioned if they wanted everything in the room, which woke up the cook
    • the men ran away at first then came back thinking the little one wanted to mock them
    • Thumbling ended up sleeping on hay in the granary after the men ran away when a maid came in to search for the thieves
    • But, in the morning, the maid grabbed the hay that Thumbling had slept in, and he didn't wake up til he was already in the mouth of a cow
    • Thumbling was swallowed by the cow and was lamenting within the cow, and when the made heard it, she believed the cow to be speaking
  • The maid ran to tell the pastor that the cow spoke, but when he heard the voice as well, he ordered the cow to be killed, fearing it was evil
    • Then a wolf swallowed the stomach of the cow
    • Thumbling decided to speak to the wolf, telling him he knew a great place for him to have a feast
      • He described his father's house, and so the wolf went and ate so much that he couldn't slip back out
    • Thumbling began to scream within the wolf, which woke up his mom and dad
    • His parents then ran to get weapons
    • Thumbling yelled to let his parents know he was in the stomach of the wolf
    • The dad killed the wolf and then they cut him open to get Thumbling out
    • Thumbling was fed and given new clothes
    • And now Thumbling had had the chance to see the world
