Reading Notes: Faerie Queen - Britomart: Reading A

Faerie Queene - Britomart by Mary Macleod

How Britomart Looked into the Magic Mirror

  • The princess, Britomart, is asked why she disguised herself as a knight and took on a journey
    • She herself is the only heir to her father's kingdom
  • She starts by saying she's been trained in the art of war since childhood and she can't live the boring life most ladies do
    • From reports, she has heard that many adventures and famous dudes and ladies are to be found in Faerie Queene (Remember this is all a lie)
  • She then says that Artegall has acted badly towards her, but this was a lie, as this was her future lover she was seeking
    • Her companion tells her she is surely wrong as Artegall is a great man, which makes her happy
  • Britomart asks her companion to tell her some distinctive characteristics of Artegall so she can recognize him when she sees him
    • But she already knew what he looked like because she had seen his reflection in a magic mirror a long time ago, and he became her only love
    • This mirror was designed by Merlin and it had the power to show everything the world had that had to do with the person looking into it
    • When looking into the mirror, she thought about what her husband would look like and the mirror showed her Artegall
  • This story goes back to when Britomart first decided to disguise herself and go on a journey
  • Britomart's old nurse suggested they disguise themselves in armor and go to find Artegall, as the country was in war
    • B is tall and strong so she can pass as a soldier
  • Her nurse then went on to list all the princesses that fought their countries enemies
    • This encouraged her to go out
  • A few days prior, a band of Britons had taken spoil from the enemy, which had armor that belonged to the Saxon Queen
    • Britomart then wore this armor
    • The two got onto horses and didn't rest till they reached the land of Faerie Queene, as Merlin had told them to do
